Many women are able to appreciate a beautiful pair of shoes. Understand the subtle differences between two seemingly identical pairs of black shoes, but I wonder if they truly see them as more than just a shoe. I have come to realize in the past month or so that my nearly five month old son is developing a shoe fetish. I first noticed his fascination with shoes one morning at story time. He was wearing a onsie, bib overalls, and his orange crocs. He normally hones in on another baby or the story teller but this morning he couldn’t keep his eyes off his feet. He wouldn’t listen to the story or stand up straight. He stood there hunched over at the waist staring at his shoes.
Those orange crocs were just the beginning. He now is the proud owner of black patent leather combat boots, hiking boots, camo crocs, cowboy boots, and of course his orange crocs. Not all of them fit quite yet but that’s not the point, they’re there, they’re ready for him to grow into and have adventures in. He has already been able to charm the ladies in his very own tux and matching black patent leather. He has been able to trek through the jungle of dogs at grandma’s house in his hiking boots. He has been able to boycott the April snow in his orange swim trunks and crocs.
Being new to motherhood I have also come to appreciate his shoes in a whole new light. His shoes are not just for running or stumbling through adventures; they are also the all important sock retention devices. These devices become very important when your little bundle of joy finds his toes and discovers how much fun it is to pull off the adorable yet expensive Winnie the Pooh or Elmo socks. I foresee these sock retention devices saving many socks from becoming sad unmatched loners.
In the life of a mom even something as simple as a tiny pair of shoes can change your universe and outlook on life.
